nanotube chips systolic array

The world of artificial intelligence (AI) is constantly evolving, with new technologies pushing the boundaries of what's possible. One of the latest breakthroughs is the development of a tensor chip based on carbon nanotubes. This cutting-edge technology holds the potential to revolutionize AI processing by making it more efficient and faster than ever before.

Carbon nanotubes are tiny cylindrical structures made of carbon atoms. They are incredibly strong and lightweight, and they have excellent electrical conductivity. These properties make them ideal for use in electronic devices. The new tensor chip takes advantage of these unique characteristics to improve the way AI computations are handled.

carbonated water injection into cement

Introduction

Concrete is a fundamental building material, but its production is a major source of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. However, a recent study published in Nature Nanotechnology introduces an innovative approach to sequestering CO2 in cement, potentially transforming the concrete industry into a carbon sink while also strengthening the material.

3D printer using recyclable materials

A new study published in Nature explores how we can use recyclable materials for 3D printing. The researchers developed a new type of resin, a material used in 3D printers, made entirely from renewable sources. This resin can be used, broken down, and reused, making it highly sustainable.

What is 3D Printing?

3D printing, or additive manufacturing, involves creating objects layer by layer using materials like plastic, metal, or resin. This technology is used in various fields, from making prototypes to producing final products. Traditional resins used in 3D printing are often derived from petroleum and are not recyclable, posing environmental challenges.

Self-Heating Gas Detector

A smart electronic nose (e-nose), or gas sensor, has been developed which detects gasses in less than a second. A recent study published in ACS Sensors announced this new gas detector by a research team led by Prof. Meng Gang from the Hefei Institutes of Physical Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It utilizes a self-heating modulation process to accurately detect different types of gas molecules within just a second.

Mathematics Computations Using Light Waves

University of Pennsylvania engineers have created a chip that makes use of light waves, rather than electricity, to perform math needed to train AI. This new Silicon Photonic chip will dramatically accelerate the processing speed of computers while cutting down on their energy requirements.

The silicon-photonic (SiPh) chip's design is the first to use pioneering research in manipulating materials at the nanoscale to perform mathematical computations using light with the SiPh technology.  Benjamin Franklin Medal Laureate and H. Nedwill Ramsey Professor Nader Engheta teamed up to develop this new chip.  Light is the fastest possible known means of communication, providing possibilities for faster computing speeds.

Artificial Robot Muscles Function Like Biological Muscles

A research team at ETH Zurich have just created artificial robot muscles to allow them to move. This is a significant improvement over previous technologies. It has applications where robots need to be soft or where more sensitivity is needed. Soft robots can interface with their surroundings in a totally different way, to soften blows like human arms and legs, or hold fragile objects without damage. Soft systems can store energy well, reducing power consumption.

Is Conscious AI Possible?

Some scientists studying consciousness say that no one knows if conscious AI already exists or is possible in the future, but are concerned about the implications.

Three leaders of the Association for Mathematical Consciousness Science (AMCS) are calling to the UN for more funding to support research on consciousness and AI.  According to them, society needs scientific investigations into the boundaries between conscious and unconscious systems. Ethical, legal and safety issues are at stake. Should AI have full or partial human rights?

ten breakthrouughs for 2024

Breakthrough #1: Ubiquitous AI

Hundreds of millions of people have used tools like ChatGPT that produce text, images, videos, and more from prompts. These AI tools are a huge breakthrough, redefining the technology sector, making OpenAI a familiar name, and forcing other competitors to invest heavily in AI tools.

Breakthrough #2: More Efficient Solar Cells

Solar power is being quickly expanded globally, a major puzzle piece in the push to reduce carbon emissions. Solar panels today are significantly less than 50% efficient.  R&D departments are looking to add a layer of tiny crystals to boost solar panel efficiency.
